What Is a Booklet Label?

A booklet label is a multi-page label produced by adding folded pages underneath a standard self-adhesive label. Without disturbing the brand design on the front of the pack, it carries extensive text on the back — from instructions for use to multilingual content and legal warnings. It is also known as an expanded content label or ECL.

How does a booklet label work?

A booklet label consists of three layers. At the bottom sits the base label that adheres to the pack, in the middle the folded and compressed booklet block, and on top the cover film that closes the booklet. When the user lifts the cover, the pages open; once reading is finished, the cover sticks down again and closes the label.

The most important property of this construction is that the label can be opened and closed many times without leaving the pack. It does not get lost like a separate leaflet and does not stay behind in the carton; the information is always on the product. Where the reseal function is not wanted, detachable constructions can also be produced, in which pages are torn off along a perforation.

Why is a booklet label needed?

Pack surfaces stay the same size while the information a pack must carry grows every year: nutrition tables and allergen emphasis in food, INCI ingredient lists in cosmetics, CLP/GHS statements in chemicals, summary of product characteristics in pharmaceuticals — and on top of all that, the language requirements of export markets.

The conventional solutions and their limits are:

  • Reducing the point size: runs into legal minimum type sizes and reduces legibility.
  • Enlarging the pack: increases tooling, filling line and transport costs together.
  • Adding a separate leaflet: requires an extra cartoning step and the document does not stay with the product.
  • Printing a separate label per country: increases the number of SKUs and the minimum order burden.

A booklet label solves all four at once: far more content, at a legible point size, on the same pack, on the same line and within a single SKU.

In short: a booklet label is a resealable, multi-page self-adhesive label that increases the usable print area from 4 up to 40 times without changing the physical dimensions of the pack.

Folding types and page planning

The folding type determines both the page count and the closed calliper of the label. The most widely used constructions are:

  • Accordion (zig-zag) Folds like bellows; ideal for long text read in sequence.
  • Parallel fold Pages fold in the same direction; keeps the closed size small.
  • Cross fold Two perpendicular directions; high area gain with few pages.
  • Combined fold Accordion + parallel; for jobs needing high page counts.
  • Multiple wrap The label wraps more than once around the container.

When the page plan is prepared, the reading order of languages, point size, folding direction and the mandatory information that must remain on the cover are all evaluated together. A badly planned page layout makes the text appear upside down or broken when the label is opened.

Types of booklet label

The main booklet label constructions, differentiated by purpose, are:

  • Encapsulated bookletA protective film covering the whole label increases durability and moisture resistance. Preferred on crop protection and chemical packaging.
  • Detachable bookletThe booklet block separates from the main label; a recipe, coupon or instruction leaflet travels with the product and can be removed when needed.
  • Stitched and glued bookletKeeps the block intact at high page counts; suitable for long instruction manuals.
  • Multiple-wrap bookletOn narrow, cylindrical bodies the label wraps several times to create multilingual content space.
  • Clinical bookletA construction specific to clinical trials, with blinding, randomisation number and a detachable record section.

The production process

Booklet label production takes one step more than standard label production: printing the booklet block, folding it and combining it with the base label.

  1. Page plan and typesetting: content is distributed across pages according to the folding structure; point size and reading direction are checked.
  2. Block printing: the booklet is printed on lightweight paper by offset, flexo or digital press.
  3. Folding: the block is folded with the chosen folding type and the closed-size tolerance is verified.
  4. Combining: the block is merged with the base label and cover film to form the complete label.
  5. Die-cutting and winding: cut with a rotary die and wound in the direction and core diameter suited to your line.
  6. Quality control: opening test, adhesion test and, where required, camera verification.

Compatibility with automatic labelling lines

Booklet labels are wound in rolls just like standard pressure sensitive labels and are applied by existing automatic applicators. For a trouble-free application, the following should be clarified before production:

  • Closed calliper of the label and roll core diameter
  • Winding direction (standard positions 1–8)
  • Line speed and applicator type
  • Material and surface energy of the application surface
  • Filling temperature and storage conditions

Once these values are shared, label calliper and adhesive selection are optimised for your line. We recommend a line trial with a sample before commissioning on every project.

How do you choose the right booklet label?

The choice starts with the application conditions, not the product. We usually ask these six questions:

  1. Which material will the label be applied to? (Glass, PET, PE, PP, board, metal)
  2. How many characters of content will it carry, and in how many languages?
  3. What are the storage temperature and shelf life of the product?
  4. Will the label come into contact with moisture, oil, alcohol or chemicals?
  5. Will it be applied by hand or on an automatic line?
  6. Does the label need to reseal, or to be detachable?

These six answers largely determine the material–adhesive–folding–page count combination. Any remaining uncertainty is resolved with a sample and a line trial.

Yes. We prepare digitally printed samples before series production. You can review the folding structure, legibility and material performance and, where possible, test it on your own filling line. Once the sample is approved, the technical specification is put on record.

How long does booklet label production take?

On standard projects the delivery time after print approval is usually 10–15 working days. Jobs requiring custom tooling, high page counts or variable data can take longer. The exact lead time is confirmed at the quotation stage according to project details.
